Chamomilla (Matricaria Chamomilla) is a homeopathic remedy that can be found in connection with all kinds of diseases. This medicine is commonly known as chamomile and belongs to the Composite family.

The word ‘Matricaria’ comes from the Latin word ‘Matrix’ which means ‘womb’, that is why it is highly used to treat many gynecological problems. The word ‘Chamomile’ comes from the Greek word ‘Chamaemelum’ means earth apple, or scented like an apple. The plant grows close to the ground and has an odor that resembles an apple.

It is an annual wild plant growing in cultivated fields of paddy and wheat. It is native to Europe, India, and Australia. The flowers of this plant are yellow and white in color and bloom from May to August.

This medicine has come into existence of homeopathy after the proving done by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. The medicine is prepared by mother tincture after taking the whole fresh plant when in flowering condition.

Medicine Constitution/Personality 

Chamomilla is a medicine particularly adapted to persons of light brown hair, especially children during the period of dentition.

The temperament of Chamomile is highly irritable, nervous, and oversensitive with red cheeks. There is nonstop crying and a desire to be carried fast.

The child is inclined to put his fingers in his mouth. It is very difficult to satisfy a Chamomilla child. The patient is very sensitive, ill-humored, and inclined to weep.

Chamomilla is also suitable for nursing mothers and pregnant women. The anger and irritability are well marked in such women with lots of contradictions.

Guiding symptoms of Chamomilla 

The sphere of action of Chamomilla is mainly on nerves, mind, and Gastrointestinal tract. By acting on the nervous system it causes intense irritability, spasms, and convulsions. It is highly indicated in hyperesthesia and turmoil.

Mind symptoms 

Chamomilla has a very good action on the mind and it is effective to treat turmoil in the patients. The patients are very irritable, oversensitive, cross, and impatient. The children who require chamomilla are uncivil, don’t respect elders, nonstop crying, and quiet only when carried.

There is an irregular convulsion in children, they can neither stand nor walk, cry piteously, and wishes to be carried.

Chamomilla patients have all types of tantrums. They are unable to decide what they want, so they keep jumping from one option to other. This is why when anything is offered to them, they refuse it immediately because there is a lot of confusion in the mind.

There is an aversion to be spoken or to be touched. They can’t endure anyone near him. They get angry by interruption and any kind of control is unacceptable to them.

Head symptoms 

Chamomilla is indicated in pulsating headache, generally in one side of the head, with cheek red and hot while other pale and cold. There is lancinating pain in the head is felt even during sleep.

It is also indicated in attacks of vertigo with a tendency to faint, in the morning after waking and after drinking coffee. The patient feels as if he were unable to collect his senses. There is so much confusion of the head with stupefaction.

Eyes symptoms

Chamomilla is indicated in various forms of inflammation in the eye, ophthalmia neonatorum (purulent ophthalmia), keratitis, especially of the pustular variety.

The eyes get swollen in the morning and agglutinated with mucus. The eyelids become swollen, eyes turned downward and pupils get dilated.

It is also effective to treat dryness of the eye due to dryness of the meibomian gland. There are stitches and pressure in the orbital origin with much burning and pain as if pressed with fingers.

Ears symptoms

Chamomilla is a great remedy for all types of pain and hence also effective in otalgia or earache. The patient is very sensitive to pain and the pain is unbearable to him with intolerance of music.

There is the feeling of pressure in the middle ear on stooping as from a blow and a spasmodic sensation extending into the auditory canal driving the patient frantic.

It is also indicated to treat tinnitus. There is ringing and roaring in the ear as from rushing of water

Nose symptoms 

Chamomilla is a very good remedy for treating nasal catarrh with the inability to sleep. There is thin, watery coryza which is fluent also and sneezing after taking a cold.

It is also indicated when there is dryness of nose and stoppage of nasal mucus, tension, and heaviness with the rush of blood to it with sensation as if he would have a nosebleed.

Chamomilla is also indicated in soreness of the nose and ulceration of the nostril from picking and blowing the nose too roughly. There is a crawling sensation in the nose and the smell is also acute.

Mouth symptoms 

Chamomilla is a valuable remedy for treating various toothache and neuralgia of the face. Toothache is unbearable and it is because of anything warm in the mouth, from coffee and on entering in a warm room.

The tongue is coated yellow dirty white with slime and blisters beneath it. There is dryness of the mouth in the morning with bitter-tasting mucus. Salivation of sweetish, metallic taste with foul smell after eating.

It is an extremely valuable remedy for the distress of teething in children.

Face symptoms

Swelling and redness of one cheek and paleness of the other are some of the characteristic symptoms of Chamomilla. The one cheek of the patient is red and hot while the other is pale and cold.

The lips of the patients are cracked and peeled from the center, dry at night, and sticking together without thirst. Sometimes bleeding from the cracks of the lips.

There is a weak feeling in the muscles of mastication with an inclination to hold the mouth open with salivation. Pain on opening the jaws as if the masseter muscle were painfully cramped and also extended into the teeth.

Throat symptoms

Chamomilla is indicated when the patient complains of hoarseness, pressure in the larynx, obliging frequent swallowing, and hawking of mucus and blood with offensive taste of what he hawks up.

There is constriction of the pharynx in the morning with stitches, soreness, and swelling in the parotid on swallowing as from the plug.

It is indicated in tonsillitis there is a swollen sensation in the tonsils and a feeling of heaviness and hardness with difficulty in swallowing.

Chest symptom

Chamomilla is effectively indicated to treat many respiratory disorders like asthma, bronchitis, catarrhal laryngitis with hoarseness, and catarrhal croup in children with suffocative attacks.

It is indicated to treat irritable dry cough from tickling in the larynx and expectoration only occasionally. There is whistling, wheezing, and rattling in the trachea when breathing.

There is suffocative tightness and oppression in the chest while sitting, impending breathing, and burning with pain in the stomach as at the beginning of heartburn.

Heart symptoms

Chamomilla is effective in heart complaints when there is slight palpitation with stitches that arrest breathing during motion. There is a feeling as if something presses the heart down with a sinking feeling in the heart.

It is indicated when there is increased rapidity of pulse not quite regular, small, and tense. At one time strong and another small and weak also irregular as to frequency.

Stomach symptoms.

Chamomilla is clinically indicated to treat gastralgia, with loss of appetite and pressure in the stomach along with nausea.

It is also indicated in the eructation of gas that smells like a rotten egg with pain in the pit of the stomach. There is nausea in the morning after drinking coffee with suffocative attacks and bilious vomiting of indigestible food.

It is an effective remedy for heartburn or acidity after eating, with burning in the epigastrium and fullness in the stomach. It is also indicated in violent retching and continuous hiccough.

Abdomen and Rectum symptoms

Chamomilla is a great remedy for abdominal colic due to the flatus in the abdomen. There is the incarceration of flatulence in the hypochondria, with continuous tensive pain and frequent stitches in the right hypochondrium especially while standing and walking.

There is a kind of hysterical movement and pressive colic around the navel. The abdomen is painful, hard, and distended. There is rumbling in the large intestine and sensation as if diarrhea will ensue.

Chamomilla is highly indicated for nightly diarrhea with colic and the patient is obliged to bend double. The nature of stool is hot, green, watery diarrhea, corroding consisting of feces and mucus together like chopped eggs and spinach.

It is also indicated to treat constipation from inactivity of the rectum so that stool could only be passed by the pressure of the abdominal muscles.

Chamomilla is effective in treating bleeding and blind piles both with soreness and itching in the anus and sticking pain in the rectum after every stool.

Urinary symptoms

Chamomilla has worked wonders in treating many urinary-related complaints when the patient complains of continual and painful urging to pass urine.

The frequency of urination is increased, sometimes involuntary with a lot of burning pain in the neck of the bladder and urethra while urination.

The force of the bladder is weakened, the urine passes in the weak stream. It is very effective in nocturnal enuresis in children and polyuria in the diabetic patient.

Male symptoms

Chamomilla has marked action on the sexual organs of both females. In males, it is highly indicated when the patient complains of nightly emission with itching and soreness on the margin of the prepuce.

The patient often complains of violent erection with a lot of sexual desire and a general flush of heat over the whole body, followed by slight sweat and nausea.

Female symptoms 

Chamomilla is a very valuable remedy for uterine hemorrhage, the flow of blood is irregular, dark, and clotted sometimes there is constant oozing of dark, foul blood with occasional bright gushes.

Chamomilla is given by a homeopath to treat many menstrual-related disorders in teenage girls. There is membranous dysmenorrhea, menstrual colic especially they extend down thighs with great nervous excitement.

It is also a great remedy for pregnant women. During labor, the patient is intolerant of the pain and wants to get away from them. The pain is spasmodic, distressing, tearing down the legs and pressing upward.

Hand and Leg symptoms

Chamomilla is indicated in violent rheumatic pain of extremities with jerking and tingling of hands and legs. The patient is tossing about the bed with pain, and it is to so extent that it drives the patient out of bed at night and compels him to walk about.

There are stitches beneath the right axilla, like electric sparks in the left shoulder extending into the muscles of the nape. The pain has been drawing and tearing, worse at night and from warmth, and felt in the ligaments and the periosteum.

Back symptoms

Chamomilla is indicated when there is swelling in the glands of the neck that is often very sensitive and painful on turning the neck. There is tensive stiffness and bruised sensation of cervical muscle.

It is an effective medicine for backache that gets aggravated on stooping and walking. There is great pain in the back, sometimes extending through the abdomen to the front and into the genitals.

There is stitching pain in the lumbar region with bruised sensation. The patient feels in the bed as if his back would be broken with pressure, dragging, and drawing pains extending from the hepatic region over the abdomen deep into the pelvis. Stiff pain in the back after sitting with a lot of weakness.

Skin symptoms

The skin of the chamomilla patient is unhealthy, yellow, hot and every injury suppurates. Skin is creepy, sensitive to touch with stinging pain and leaving soreness after scratching.

It is a great remedy for treating rashes of infants, consisting of thick pimples which are crowded into a red spot in the skin. The skin is inclined to inflammation.

Chamomilla is a wonderful remedy for allergic reactions in children. It is indicated in the repercussion of measles after taking cold with watery evacuation. It is also very effective in treating hives in very fretful and peevish children.

Fever symptoms

Chamomilla is a great fever remedy for children when there is an alteration of heat and cold all over the body, especially on the face. There is a constant alternation of heat and coldness of various parts.

Heat and shivering are intermingled mostly with one cheek red and hot and the other pale and cold. Shivering from cold air and by uncovering.

During fever, there is the heat of the whole body and sweat, with vomiting of bitter mucus followed by a bitter taste in the mouth, weakness in the head, and nausea.

Chamomilla Dosage & Potencies

The dosage and potency of the medicine depend on the individual case.

Chamomilla 30 Uses

Lower potency is given when very few symptoms of the patient match with Chamomilla and help the doctor only to diagnose the disease condition. 

This potency requires frequent repetition, 3-4 times a day, till the expected result is seen. 

Chamomilla 200 Uses

This is considered as higher potency; they are given when the majority of mental symptoms and physical symptoms of Chamomilla are matched with the disease individuals.

Higher potencies are advisable to be not repeated very often; they act for a long duration of days, so the second dose is repeated every 7-days or every 15-days once.

Chamomilla 1M Uses

This is very high potency. One should give it only after careful case analysis, where all medicinal symptoms of Chamomilla and that given by the patient match perfectly. 

One should not repeat 1 M potency. It is given 30 days once and waiting for symptoms to disappear.

Chamomilla Q (Mother Tincture) Uses

The mother tincture of Chamomilla is very effective for infants during dentition and diarrhea in children. Stomach-related and menstrual disorders are also get cured by this mother tincture.

It also helps in reducing restlessness and impatience in the patients.

It is very effective in relieving all kinds of pains, especially toothache.

Take 10 drops of mother tincture of Chamomilla in half a cup of water three times a day till the improvement occurs.
