It is an animal kingdom remedy, belongs to the family Porifera, and is commonly known as a Roasted sponge. Spongia contains iodine which is responsible for many of the symptoms produced by it. However, it contains some other substances besides iodine also
According to Hahnemann, the toasted sponge was first mentioned as a specific for goiter by chemist, Arlon Von in the thirteenth century, but it was generally mixed with other substances where it failed in curing the disease till Hahnemann proved it.
Medicine is prepared from the tincture by taking 20 grains of the tincture in 400 drops of alcohol.
Spongia Tosta is a remedy specially adapted to diseases of children and women who are of light hair and fair complexion and for tubercular diathesis.
The sphere of action of Spongia is on the mucus membrane of air passage, respiratory organ, gland, and male genitals. One of the keynotes of Spongia is the dryness of the mucus membrane of the tongue, pharynx, larynx, and trachea. This dryness generally causes cough which is also very dry, intensely hacking and sounding like a saw being driven through a pine board.
This medicine is highly indicated in the case of dry asthma, where the patient rises generally after midnight with fear of suffocation and death with violent loud cough, agitation, anxiety, and difficult respiration. The sputa cannot be raised and it must be swallowed.
Spongia is an indicated remedy for croup. The patient is anxious, wheezing, and worse during inspiration and better by eating or drinking warm things. One of the important indications of Spongia is patient awakens in fright and feels suffocated as if he had to breathe through a sponge.
This remedy also acts on the cardiovascular system and is highly effective in treating hypertrophy of the heart it is specially indicated when the right heart is affected and when asthmatic symptoms are associated with it.

In Spongia Tosta patients, timidity, terror, and tendency to be frightened are the major leading mental symptoms. Patients are fretful and anxious about their condition and fear they will die of suffocation.

The patient has an irresistible desire to sing with excessive mirth. Alternately lively and lachrymose and peevish, quarrelsome mood. Taciturn and discontented, fearful and tormented by a frightful image of the past and event.
Spongia Tosta is effective to give relief from headaches. There is a constant headache at one point of the head with lachrymation and feeling as if everything would press out at the forehead.
There is a heaviness on the head with a fullness that gets aggravated on stooping. During the headache, there is a rush of blood also with external heat of the forehead and perceptible pulsation in the arteries of the neck.
The patient experiences headaches as if the head would burst along with vertigo. There is a paroxysmal heaviness on walking and on turning the head with stitching in it and heat on the face.
Eyes are deeply sunken, protruding, and staring. The patient complains about looking intensely on one spot there is lachrymation with headache with pressure and shooting in the eyes.
Spongia is indicated in eruptions of yellow scabies in the eyebrows that are painful to touch. There is pressive heaviness of the eyelids and also agglutination of the eyelids in the morning.
This remedy is effective in treating myopia or defective vision for distant objects. There is difficulty in recognizing distant objects with lachrymation and drawing pain in the eyes.
Spongia Tosta is effective in treating earache that has constrictive pain in the ears. The patient feels a cramp-like pain in the ear when walking in an open-air and also a tensive pain and fine stitches from within outward as if through the drum.
The patient also experiences difficulty in hearing with a dull ringing in the ears. In such a condition Spongia can be indicated but only when all the other symptoms of this remedy match perfectly.
Spongia Tosta’s patients are inclined to take cold easily. They are also very chilly patients and develop fluent coryza and frequent coryza afterward. In this condition, this remedy is highly indicated to give relief.
There is dullness and a sensation of gloominess over the root of the nose. After the fluent coryza, a stage comes where the nasal mucus gets stopped and causes congestion. There is a violent and long-continued nosebleed when the patient blows his nose to clear the mucus. This remedy therefore effective in treating dry coryza, stuffed nose, and epistaxis after blowing the nose.
Spongia is indicated in oral problems when the patient’s mouth and tongue will be covered with vesicles with burning and shooting pain, on that account, there will be difficulty in eating any slid food. The speech also gets affected due to dryness of the tongue and vesicles over the edges of the tongue.
It is indicated in neuralgic pain in the root of the tooth and hence effective in treating toothache also. Patients complain of a sensation of bluntness and looseness in the teeth while masticating. There is shooting pain in the teeth and swelling of the gums which are painful to touch and cause difficulty in mastication.
There is paleness on the face, with the dullness of the eyes of the patients of Spongia Tosta. The cheeks get swelled up and there is cramp-like pain extending from the articulation of the jaw to the cheek while eating.
There are several swollen glands beneath the lower jaw that are painful to touch. Also, there are fine stitches beneath the lower lip. Patients also complain of eruption on the lips which can be treated by Spongia Tosta.
Spongia is a remedy indicated in goiter a condition where the thyroid gland gets enlarged. In this condition, there is a sensation as if it were loose, a sensation of working and distension as if everything moving about in it, as if alive. There are stitches in the goiter, especially when swallowing and there is slight aching when not swallowing.
It is an indicated remedy for sore throat especially after eating any sweet things. There are constantly needle-like stitches above the pit of the throat. Burning in the throat and larynx and afterward in the ear. All the complaints of the throat get better by lying down.
Affections generally of larynx and trachea particularly in all such affections as croup asthma where everything is perfectly tight and dry.
Patients also experience a sensation as if a plug is lodged in the larynx that causes difficulty in swallowing. The sputa cannot be raised, it must be swallowed. There is great dryness of the larynx and gets aggravated on hawking.
Spongia Tosta is a valuable remedy for dry, rattling cough. Cough proceeding from the bottom of the chest with pain as from excoriation and burning sensation. Cough with yellow expectoration of viscid mucus and hoarseness and croupy-sounding.
Patient experiences slow and deep respiration as from weakness. The respiration is like wheezing, whistling, and suffocative as if the patient has to breathe through a sponge. The patient awakens from sleep with a suffocative sensation and spasmodic, constrictive pain in the whole chest.
It is used to dyspnoea in asthmatic patients with fullness, soreness, and obstruction in the chest. There is congestion in the chest after the slightest effort and movement, with obstructed respiration and weakness which induces syncope.
Spongia Tosta is a good remedy for rheumatic affection of the valves of the heart. It is used in rheumatic heart disease in which the heart valves have been damaged. Patients complain of constricting, stinging, and pressing pain in the cardiac region. There is pain and anxiety around the heart region.
It is also used to treat violent palpitation of the heart with suffocative respiration. Heart beats very rapidly and the pulse becomes full, hard, and frequent.
This medicine is also very effective in treating angina pectoris when the patient experiences pain and heat, faintness and suffocation after midnight.
Spongia Tosta id indicated a remedy for gastric troubles. There is frequent eructation of sour liquid in the mouth also constant hiccough which makes the patient irritable. It is used to treat acidity which acid reflux from the stomach to the esophagus of the patients. There is bitter rising, sour regurgitation, nausea, and acid in the mouth.
There is an increase in appetite and thirst. The patient feels hungry and could not satisfy himself. There is an excessive thirst for cold water and a craving for dainties with the taste of fresh nuts.

Patients often complain of fullness and difficulty in the abdomen and violent cutting colic after eating. The pain is severe that the patient is obliged to bend the abdomen up with great urging to stool.
It is also used to treat the swelling of the glands in the groins where experience tensive pain while walking. It is an effective remedy for hernia, there is tensive, cramp-like pain in the inguinal region while sitting,
There is bruised and sore pain in the anus during the evacuation of stool. The patient also experiences a twinging or sharp localized pain in the anus after every stool and rumbling in the abdomen before every stool. Sometimes threadworms are also passed in the stool hence this remedy is also very effective in treating pinworm infection.
Spongia Tosta is indicated in incontinence of urine in young adults. There is frequent urging to urinate with scanty emission. The frequency of urination increased with small and thin streams of urine. The urine deposits thick greyish-white sediments and froths like yeast.
The male patients of Spongia Tosta have complained of voluptuous itching on the tip of the glans penis that provokes the patient to rub it. There is also itching and burning of the body of the penis and scrotum that makes the patient irritable.
This medicine is clinically indicated to treat epididymitis. There is testicular pain that is of stitching and pressive and squeezing type. Testicles become swollen and painful to touch with painful swelling of the spermatic cord also.
Spongia is indicated to solve menstrual-related disorders in females. There is an irregularity in menses, generally, menses appear too early and have profuse blood flow. It is used to treat dysmenorrhea or painful menses in which the patient experiences back pain and thigh pain before and during menses.
It is also used to treat ovarian tumors in patients. The ovaries get enlarged and indurated with much pain in the abdomen and pelvic region and irregularities in periods.
This medicine is indicated when patients explain their symptoms where there is twitching of the muscles of the shoulder joint, pressive pain in the tip of the elbow, and stitches on the elbow joint on the motion. There is trembling in the forearms and hands and flexing the arm a stitch in the tip of the elbow followed by tearing in the joint, so long as the arm remained bent.
There is heaviness in the knee joints which causes difficulty while walking. There is great excitement and uneasiness in both legs, the patient is obliged to change the position frequently. There are needle-like stitches in the heels while sitting after a long walk.

This remedy is useful to fix the rigidity in muscles of the nape of the neck and painful tension in the neck and throat that is especially felt on turning the head.
It is used to treat cervical spondylitis, where there is jerking in the cervical muscles while lying down and large slow stitches immediately on waking from sleep. There are drawing needle-like stitches on the sides of the neck.
A pressive sensation, extending upward and downward through the spine, while sitting erect. The small of the back is very numb. During stool, the patient experiences pressure in the lumbar region caused by flatus and dull stitches in the lumbar muscles.
Spongia is often indicated to treat many skin’s related issues like skin eruption after fever, pimples, boils that are painful to touch, and large urticaria-like blisters. There is creeping in the skin always on small spots after which the spots become red and hotly followed by biting itching and not relieved by scratching.
There is voluptuous inching in the ball of the thumb, back of the toe, and on the cheek as on the outbreak of perspiration which provokes rubbing. If the patient scratches the itching spot the itching occurs in many other parts. This symptom is a clear indication for Spongia tosta and if given to the patient it will do wonders.
Spongia tosta is indicated in fever where all the three stages of fever are well marked. In the chill stage of fever, there is shivering and chilliness of the whole body, especially on the back which does not relieve warmth. Hands are cold and the sensation of coldness is also felt in the lower extremities but the heat of the whole body.
Fever comes with pain in the head and abdomen, followed by violent shaking chill and some thirst afterward. There are several attacks of heat afterward, patient longed o die on spot. There is sudden apprehensive warmth of the whole body with redness of the face and cold perspiration.

They are categorized as aggravating factors and amelioration factors.
Aggravating factors make the condition of the illness worst, while the amelioration factor makes the condition of the disease better.

Spongia tosta 30 Uses
Lower potency is given when very few symptoms of the patient match with Spongia tosta and help the doctor only to diagnose the disease condition.
This potency requires frequent repetition, 3-4 times a day, till the expected result is seen.
This is considered as higher potency; they are given when the majority of mental symptoms and physical symptoms of Spongia tosta are matched with the disease individuals.
Higher potencies are advisable to be not repeated very often; they act for a long duration of days, so the second dose is repeated every 7-days or every 15-days once.
This is a very high potency of Spongia tosta medicine. One should give it only after careful case analysis, where all medicinal symptoms of Spongia tosta and that given by the patient match perfectly.
One should not repeat 1 M potency. It is given 30 days once and waiting for symptoms to disappear or until any new symptoms appear.
The mother tincture of Spongia tosta is used to give relief from respiratory troubles like croup, cough, painful breathing, congestion in the chest, and suffocation due to Asthma.
It is also used to treat goiter when the thyroid gland is emerged and swelled up. It helps in treating skin conditions as well like itching here and there in the body, urticarial blisters, painful eruptions, and boils.
Take 10 drops of Spongia tosta tincture in half cup water thrice a day for 15 days and repeat only if new symptoms appear.
This lower potency of Spongia tosta works well in conditions like sore throat, congestive headache, anxiety, weakness, and tiredness in the body. It is also beneficial in treating many menstrual troubles in females.
Take 10 drops of dilution directly on the tongue one time a day till the symptoms disappear.
